To keep track of your expenses, clients, invoices and so on, small business owners have to find the right accounting software to help them on these painful tasks.

There are some great online accounting apps that can help you focus on your clients instead of your bookkeeping. In this article we bring you 10 great options for this kind of app, just grab the one you like the most and start getting organized on the fly!

And as always, please comment if you’ve got another tool to share!

1. FreshBooks

Freshbooks is our personal choice of accounting software because it offers all the services we need, such as “multi currency”, “Paypal integration” and “Estimate tracking” on a very easy to use and beautiful piece of software.

Its API also integrates into many other apps like BaseCamp, MailChimp or SalesForce, its time tracker is easy to install on your computer and the iPhone App works like a charm when you are on the road.

2. FreeAgent

FreeAgent is also a great looking accounting software, has many very useful functionalities and a great user interface. It’s an app that comes very close to FreshBooks, both on what they offer to its users and on the price (USD 20.00/mo), but it still lacks some integration with major CRM or Project Management softwares.

On the other side, its a very visual software and offers some other, very interesting features, such as bank account integration, accountant username and a straight forward accounting section.

3. LessAccounting

According to the guys at Florida based company LessEverything, Inc, they created LessAccounting because they struggled with accounting, because accounting is scary, accounting is boring and quite simply, no one likes accounting.

LessAccounting is a product to mainly keep accounting simple and bring clarity to a small business accounting. They focus on a easy to use software, with the main features an accounting software needs and with less hassle having to learn everything from scratch.

4. QuickBooks Online

This is the online version of one of the most used accounting softwares out there: QuickBooks. But, like the “software” version, this app has so many options you might get lost quickly. On the other hand, if you already use QuickBooks, this is a great option to keep your information online since you can easily import data form QuickBooks Desktop software.

Not the best option if you’re starting on accounting, but if you’re used to the Desktop version of QuickBooks, this might be the way to go.

5. Outright

Outright is backed by the major VC around and has been the back-office application for more than 21 million individuals and small businesses.

Looking at these numbers we can tell that Outright is a great accounting software with one goal: to keep it as simple as possible; helping entrepreneurs track all of their income and expenses to get their taxes done accurately.

What else? It is a completely FREE accounting software.

6. Xero

Xero is a UK based accounting app that looks great and is very visual. With plans starting at $19.00 and some awesome features like bank reconciliation, multi-user accounts and payroll, this great app also offers an API for in depth integration if needed.

7. Pulse

Pulse is a very basic yet beautiful application for managing your small business cashflow and made for you to organize your income and expenses by company and project.

8. Clarity Accounting

Clarity Accounting is an online application that gives you the tools you need to invoice and receive payment from your customers as well as tracking expenses at your company.

Try their demo clicking here and check it out for yourself, very easy and straight forward accounting software.

9. Zoho Invoice

From the well known Zoho Corp., Zoho Invoice is an easy-to-use online invoicing (and accounting) software that helps you send invoices for your projects and customer expenses, receive payments and track the overall health of your business quickly and efficiently.

It makes invoicing and following-up really easy – reducing the time it takes you to manage the paperwork and get paid, so you can remain focused on your customers and your business.

But more than that, this app helps you track expenses and your company’s financial health.

10. BionicBooks

BionicBooks looks like one of those 90′s softwares at first glance. But after getting to know it better an looking at its features, it ends up being a great option for simple accounting needs, and of course, FREE.

It’s an UK based software but can be configured to be used in many different countries in different currencies. Lacks some features and doesn’t have any external API for integration with other apps, but is a great (and cost effective) option if you are looking for a simple accounting software.

Thanks for sharing those apps. I have used couple of them (mostly for invoicing) before I switched to Curdbee (http://curdbee.com), a dead simple invoicing tool which is available for free.

Thought I’d mention it here, coz it has helped me organize my invoices and get paid via PayPal and Google Checkout at zero expense. Before I made the switch I’ve been paying at least $150/yr and thanks to these guys I am saving it now.

      Hi Terri!

Curbee is actually just an invoicing app and is listed as such under this post: http://www.the10most.com/entrepreneurs/the-10-leading-online-invoicing-systems-for-your-new-business.html. The apps on this page are more complex accounting systems!

      Tks for your input!

Great article! Though in followup to your last comment, @jwaldeck, I would say that Curdbee is actually more robust of an accounting system than Freshbooks. Though they are similar in scope (both are pitched mainly as invoicing/billing apps), Curdbee’s features make tracking expenses a little easier. I found Freshbooks difficult to use as an accounting package.

Just thought I’d throw in my 2-cents. :)

Hi Dan! I have to agree. When this post was written, Curdbee was actually simpler. I just took a deeper look into it and they now offer a lot of accounting services as well. I just don’t like the weird pricing model, with modules you “attach” to your services for a fee each (or you can get everything in the “big” package for the same price that Freshbooks charges). It’s also very hard to understand what the different features are in each, but overall it seems to be a nice piece of software as well.
